Ice BEAM is a Scottish independent game studio made up of one person, Tom Goodchild, with the intention of making joyful video games on innumerable gaming platforms.
Tom Goodchild was born in the deep recesses of Somerset and loved games from a very early age, adopting (read: stealing) his brothers ZX spectrum to play such golden oldies as Target Renegade and Turbo Esprit and wondering what he was going to do with his life. After studying programming at Yeovil College, Tom then enrolled on the Computer Games Technology course, the first ever video game focused degree level course available in Europe, at Abertay University in Dundee and his career in the vidoe games industry was launched.
After graduating from Abertay, Tom started his video game career in 2002. Tom has worked at working at:
- Free Radical
- Monumental Games
Amongst others for nearly a fourteen year period on various game franchises including the Formula 1, Star Wars, MotoGP, and Micro Machines licenses. Tom has worked on third person open world action games, first person shooters, racing games, puzzle games, platformer games, social games, massively multiplayer games & mobile free to play games and was lead designer on:
- Toy Box Turbos / Micro Machines - Codemasters
- F1 Race Stars - Codemasters
- MotoGP 09/10/11 - Capcom / Monumental Games
Founding Ice BEAM
After having his first child in 2012, Tom decided is was "now or never" for the idea of starting his own company and began the first tentative steps to creating Ice BEAM's first release: SOCKETEER. Tom quit his job at Codemasters in 2015 and moved with his family to Dundee, where his wife's family is from, to found Ice BEAM. Tom has been working full time on SOCKETEER since then.
